What Could This Look Like?

A new SkyTrain line through kʷikʷəƛ̓əm lands should actively involve the kʷikʷəƛ̓əm people in its design and construction processes to ensure it appropriately honours their culture and territory.

It's important to leave the planning and design of the SkyTrain extension to the experts, but exploring a hypothetical design can help us visualize potential benefits and opportunities for the region. This kind of conceptual approach offers valuable insights into what could be achieved.

The kʷikʷəƛ̓əm (Kwikwetlem) people have inhabited these lands for thousands of years, and it's important to acknowledge the unceded status of their territory. In honoring kʷikʷəƛ̓əm culture and resilience, the name 'Red Fish Extension' could serve as a tribute to the kʷikʷəƛ̓əm’s culture and resilience. The 'red fish' refers to the once-abundant sockeye salmon who swam up and down the rivers, symbolizing movement and prosperity.

Like the salmon's journey, this new line will act as a concrete river, carrying settlers and kʷikʷəƛ̓əm people alike through their ancestral lands, fostering growth and opportunity for the region.

“The SkyTrain extension to Port Coquitlam will transform our city by reducing traffic, cutting emissions, and boosting local business. We’ll break ground by 2026, creating jobs and a more connected, vibrant community. This project is a huge step towards a sustainable, thriving future for all of us.”

— Adam Bremner-Akins, BC Green Party Secretary

With seamless integration into bus routes and the West Coast Express, this extension will make it easier for families, students, and workers to move throughout the Lower Mainland, all while reducing traffic congestion and cutting emissions. The economic benefits are equally impressive. Every dollar invested in transit generates five dollars in business revenue, meaning this project will bring significant financial growth, attract new businesses, and create jobs. Local businesses will thrive as more people visit and explore Port Coquitlam’s vibrant community.
